About Us

First Step Daycare & Nursery was opened in April 2011. It is owned by a family that is passionate about driving standards and providing good quality childcare.

We are a 80-plcae registered nursery and the recent Ofsted inspection report rated us “Good”. Here are some of the excerpts:

Our setting is divided into 3 units (subject to learning and developmental progress) namely:

  • Ladybird (Babies): from 3 months – 18/24 months
  • Butterfly (Toddlers): from 18/24 months – 30/36 months
  • Honeybee (Preschool):    30/36 months – 60 months

Children's Learning and Development Curiculum for First Step Nursery

We operate in line with national guidelines using the key worker system under the EYFS curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept happy and safe. Key aspect include: quality and consistency, a secure foundation, partnership working and equality of opportunity. The EYFS begins when children starts nursery school and continues through to the reception year at primary school.

There are four overarching themes for our work with children namely:

A Unique Child: Every Child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient capable, confident and self-assured.

Positive relationship: Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships

Enabling Environment: Children learn and develop well in enabling environments where their experiences relate to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents/carers

Learning and development: The framework covers the education and care of all children in early year’s provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities. 


There are seven areas of learning and development; three prime areas and four specific;


-Communication and language

-Physical development

-Personal, social and emotional development.




-Understanding the world, and

-Expressive arts and design.

Our aim is to empower children by providing a curriculum that encourages thinking; that offers opportunities to explore a range of experiences and ideas. Learning is often a social experience; where children learn from each other, learn how to be with each other and learn how to teach others.

When your child attends the setting for settling you will be given more information on the curriculum as well as the nursery policies and procedures. All these information are available for all existing and new parents.

  • Support is given to children to develop their independence whilst recognising their individuality
  • Freshly prepared healthy balanced meals served at lunch and tea time in addition to snacks being served in the morning and afternoon.
  • Regular outings i.e. to the local library and parks as well as planned visits to major places of interest in and around London.

Children’s progress is monitored regularly and reviewed in partnership with parents


  • Group and individual planned activities
  • Child-initiated play and activities
  • Outdoor play is available through free-flow and at set times during the day 


Our practitioners plan daily and weekly to provide a aried proghramme of challenging activities to develop all areas of learning. Each child's individual needs are identified by observing them in their play. Practitioners will then discuss and evaluate their observations and provide appropriate activities to deepen and extend children's interests and understanding. We hope that children develop an awareness of the learning process and have positive approach to learning new things, become self-motivated and independent. WE encourage children's curiosity by enhancing our provision with a rabge of materials and experiences to invetigate and explore. this will include visits to places of interest outside the nursery and from visitors to the nursery. These experiences help children to make links , see patterns and make sense of their world.   


some of children in our nursery are learning English in addition to their home language. Our provision is based children learning through first-hand experience and play-based activities. It is enhanced by the use visual resources and experienced practitioners who are skilled in working with children developing bilingual skills.

Learning Outside

the outside learning environment is as impiortant as the classroom areas. Children enjoy playing outside  and the development of their physical skills promotes their intellectual discoveries. The range of activities offered outside supports children's learning in all areas of curriculum.

Children at First Step Nursery go outside in all weathers and have raincoats (when it is raining) while parents are asked to provide their children Wellies (Wellington Boots). The nursery boasts of a soft tiled secured playground and nature garden within our premises. Our nursery staff and children cultivate vegetables. Thus, the children learn how to grow crops and vegetables and someof them are harvested to prepare meals for them to eat.    

Record of Achievement/Learning Journey - Sharing information about your child's progress

Each child has a communication book and a learning journal used to record a child's progress during their in the nursery. It includes photograph and samples of work done. This record is available for parents and carers  to look at and we value your contributions to it. You are welcome to add things from home i.e. comments your child has made; details of experiences you have shared, photopgraphs or pictures. You will be invited to regular  termly meetings with your child's key worker to share information about your child's learning and development. If your child has a special educational need, meetings may include other people who are supporting your child.
